The aims of the project are to study

1) pathogenenis of enterovirus induced myocarditis in mouse models

2) pathogenesis of virus infections in cell cultures with special emphasis on virus induced apoptosis and inhibition of virus replication by gene silencing (collaboration Academy prof. Dennis Bamford, Helsingin yliopisto) and cysteine proteinase inhibitors (collaboration prof. Magnus Abrahamson, University of Lund, Sweden)

3) human virus infections

a. etiology and mechanisms of human myocarditis

b. virus infections of central nervous system (collaboration prof. Pirkko Kotilainen, Department of Medicine and MD Laura Kupila, Department of Neurology, Turku University Central Hospital)

c. virus infections of respiratory tract (collaboration prof. Olli Ruuskanen and doc. Terho Heikkinen, Department of Pediatrics, Turku University Central Hospital
