The Sleep Research Unit promotes co-operation and dialogue across disciplinary and institutional boundaries within the field of sleep research. Having its roots in basic physiology, the Sleep Research Unit aims at unfolding physiological mechanisms behind normal and disturbed sleep and disseminating new data in the field of sleep medicine for the benefit of medical students, health care professionals, scientists and the society. Since 1999, the Sleep Research Unit has organized Sleep School once a month during the academic year under the umbrella of the Postgraduate School of Health Sciences. In 2009, Nursing Sleep School once a month was started to address the needs of sleep technologists and nurses working in the field of sleep disorders and sleep research. The staff of the Turku Sleep Research Unit essentially contributed in organizing the 7th World Congress of Sleep Apnea in Helsinki in 2003 and the Nordic Sleep 2009 Conference in Turku 2009.
