Medical students need not only theoretical knowledge, but also practical skills before they start to work with patients. To learn clinical interview techniques and methods of physical examination needs personal guidance.
In emergency situations, such as a heart attack, rapid action is needed. When normal breathing has stopped, a ventilation tube (intubation) is needed and in cardiac arrest additional specific actions are required. SimMan® is a portable and advanced patient simulator for group training in these and other skills. It has realistic anatomy and clinical functionality and provides simulation-based education, to challenge and test students’ clinical and decision-making skills during realistic patient-care scenarios. SimMan® includes well-proven software and an interactive technologically-advanced manikin, allowing learners to practice the emergency treatment of patients. Often patients need an intravenous line for fluid therapy. Physicians need skills, such as how to suture skin wounds and how to do different invasive procedures, such as lumbar puncture to diagnose meningitis.
The Clinical Skills Learning Centre is a place where students can practice all this with phantoms. There are several computers for access to the library and to additional learning materials such as videos. The computers are connected to the hospital, so that the students can practice the writing of patient records.
