Degree Studies in Paediatrics

Course director: Professor Olli Simell, MD, PhD
Medical year: 5
Term: spring, autumn
Degree: Licentiate of Medicine

The primary aim of the course of paediatrics is to provide the students with skills to recognise diagnose and treat common paediatric diseases, and to select patients requiring special treatment to be referred to an appropriate level of the health care organisation.

Knowledge about the normal growth and development of the child, diagnostic and treatment procedures, and signs and symptoms of diseases is a prerequisite for learning these skills. Special attention is paid on the effect of a sick child, on the psychosocial balance of the whole family, and on practical skills needed in dealing with children of different ages, and their families.
