Medical Biochemistry and Genetics

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Genetics belongs to the Institute of Biomedicine in Faculty of Medicine. The teaching activities of the Department mainly take place in the "Medisiina" building. In addition, a significant proportion of research activities are carried out in the "BioCity" building.

The Department provides undergraduate education on medical biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular medicine, and medical genetics. The students include medical and dental students, as well as students of the health biosciences and other programs. The research groups at the Department also provide several opportunities for pro gradu and doctoral thesis projects.

The research at the Department focuses on the characterization of molecular mechanisms that control the basic functions of the body, as well as on the role of molecules in the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Genetic research focuses on the molecular genetics and molecular biology of heritable diseases, as well as on molecular anthropology. The common goal of the research at the Department is to generate a bridge between basic medical sciences and clinical medicine.

The activities of the Department also include a laboratory for diagnostic chromosome and DNA tests.
