Welcome to the www-pages of the Department of Surgery, University of Turku.
Our purpose is to develop surgery, and carry out surgical teaching and research. The two semesters of the basic education of surgery are included in the examination of medical licenciate. The goals of the basic teaching is to give readiness and skills to the medical student to examine a surgical patient, diagnose common surgical diseases, participate in daily surgical activities and take part in research and treatment programs of surgical patients. The continuing surgical education includes training of surgical residents as well as education in surgical science. Education leading to the degree of a specialist surgeon is given in gastroenterological surgery, paediatric surgery, plastic surgery, cardiac and thoracic surgery, urology, vascular surgery, general surgery and neurosurgery. In the training program leading to the degree of a medical doctor the trainees receive theoretical teaching organised by the medical faculty as well as practical and scientific support given by senior researcher(s) before completion of the thesis.
