Teaching
The curriculum of the teaching is presently under the renovation. New teaching entity of Dermatology, Pulmonary Diseases, and Clinical Allergology (IKA-block) will start in October 2006. The teaching is given during courses C9-10. Tuberculosis and infections of the lower respiratory tract are teached earlier in the course of Infectious diseases during C6. Part of the course will get the group teaching of IKA-block in the Satakunta Central Hospital in Pori.. The teaching of allergology has now integrated in such a way in this entity that only food allergy and intolerance of the children is teached later, during the course of Paediatry. During courses C11-12 there will be given additional teaching about some topics closely related to general practice.
During teaching of Pulmonary Diseases and Clinical Allergology the students are introduced to the clinical aspects of structure and function of the lungs, the methods used in the investigation of the patients, the risks and complications of the investigations, and how the results should be interpreted. The prevalence of the most common respiratory diseases and allergy, factors related to the morbidity, treatment and consequencies of the disease, as well as principles of the prevention are also teached. The aims of the teaching is to give to the student the ability to diagnose and treat these diseases in the general practice and to conclude when it is time to admit the patient to the specialist´s investigations to the hospital. After having been finished the course the student should be ready in general practice to take care of the further treatment of the patient, prescribed by a specialist doctor.
The power point presentations of the course are written in English. For foreign exchange students the group teaching is given in English and selected topics can be lectured in English according to the demand.
