PREPARING YOUR TRIP TO SÃO PAULO / BRAZIL
São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, whose population is about 11 million and almost 20 million in its metropolitan region. It is the capital of the Southeastern state of São Paulo, and also a beehive of activity that offers an intense business tourism schedule, jovial nightlife and a cultural experience. São Paulo is one of the richest cities in the southern hemisphere, though inequality between the classes typically observed in Brazil is blatant. Historically attractive to immigrants as well as (somewhat later) Brazilians from other states, it's one of the most diverse cities in the world.
São Paulo, known too as "Sampa" with its own idiosyncrasies and exquisite way of living of its inhabitants, has world-class restaurants and diverse regional and international cuisine for all tastes. The major attraction of this city is the excellent quality of its restaurants and the variety of cultural activities on display. The climate is tropical of altitude, characterized by summer rainfall and average annual temperature between 19°C and 27°C. But all seasons can be seen in a single day in São Paulo. The city may dawn sunny and cloudless and finish the day with a thunderstorm. So it is common to see São Paulo natives with coats and umbrellas on hot days. In autumn, the temperature is mild; averaging around 23oC. Winter (June to Sept.) usually has sunny days and dry, with temperature that rarely drops below 15°C.
USEFUL INFORMATION TO ORIENT YOURSELF IN SÃO PAULO
The basic spot for orientation in the city of São Paulo should be the Paulista Avenue (Avenida Paulista). From there, it is pretty easy to reach every spot in town, by bus or subway. The Paulista Avenue is located amongst the Bela Vista, Jardim Paulista, Cerqueira Cesar and Pinheiros neighborhoods. The Avenida Paulista is also within walking distance from Downtown and Ibirapuera Park, which makes it the perfect place to start a walking tour. However, keep in mind that central of São Paulo actually comprises a very large area, and go from one spot to another may require that you take a taxi or public transport.
ARRIVING AT THE CITY OF SÃO PAULO
Flights that arrive from abroad land at the Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) known as Cumbica´s Airport, located 40 km from São Paulo downtown. Taxis are plentiful outside the arrival terminal. Taxi passengers can pay by credit card in advance of the journey, at the booth of taxi companies at the airport. It is useful to have local currency (Real) because the international credit cards or debit cards cannot be accepted in all Brazilian businesses. Expect to pay about R$120 to R$140 (depending upon your destination) for 25 km journey into the city. Passengers can ask to see the price list, which shows the fares for each neighborhood. Other options such as Sao Paulo Airport Transfers provide upmarket vehicles and drivers, with the added convenience of an online booking service, and cost around R$ 140. When making your travel plan, keep in mind that a taxi ride into the city can take up to two hours during peak times, or around 45 minutes late at night or early in the morning. Other option of transportation is the shuttle. The company Airport Bus Service offers bus each hour with destiny at the Avenida Paulista (route nearest at the School of Nursing) with lower cost than taxi, R$ 35, with route time approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
