Carol Smith
Doctor Carol Smith is a professor in School of Nursing in Preventive Medicine & Public Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She belongs to the most respected researchers in nursing. In her research she has mainly concentrated on the use of technology and mentorship. She is known for her research into the physical, emotional, financial, and social effects of in-home technology care such as mechanical ventilation or daily total parenteral nutrition infusion. In her work she has emphasized creating relatively low cost technologies that can be used effectively to reach and support informal caregivers across all social economic status and age groups from rural and urban areas. The teaching materials she has developed for patients to manage heart failure won 2007 International Health Media Award. Dr. Smith’s research has not been adopted only in the USA but worldwide.
Dr. Smith has established several web based university courses for interdisciplinary and international academic students of all levels. She has consulted for the National Science Foundation, State Agencies for Aging and several Colleges of Nursing for web program development. She has published on the quality standards for internet nursing degrees and internet patient education as well. Besides national and university wide mentorship awards she has also earned doctoral and graduate scholars awards. Dr. Smith has served as faculty for the European Doctoral Degree in Nursing Science since 2005 where she e.g. teaches research design every other year in Turku.
Dr. Smith has published numerous significant international research articles in nursing and interdisciplinary journals including the most cited article in the Journal of Nursing Research (2004). She has received remarkable grants e.g. from National Institute of Health (NIH) and she has served on Pew Research Center’s grant reviews and Science Consensus Panels. She has also presented health policy recommendations to NIH, American Academy of Sciences and the 21st Century Healthcare Caucus on Capitol Hill.
