Nursing science as a part of health sciences focuses on caring on human being. Nursing can be defined as taking care of own well-being and health and other persons’ as well. The goal is to produce, maintain and promote health among individuals, qroups, and society based on life situation, resources and opportunities.
Human individuals and their health are seen as the fundamental starting-point for nursing actions in different environments. Thus, the main focus of nursing research lies on clients’ or patients’ needs.
In the field of nursing science, the goal of basic research is to develop descriptive and explanatory nursing theories. Applied research aims to develop different working and teaching methods, measurement instruments and practical models to be used in clinical practice, teaching and health care administration. The central goal of nursing research is to analyse, develop and evaluate nursing activities, decision making strategies and learning and teaching strategies as well. Shared positions among professors at the South-West Hospital District enable a solid collaboration between nursing practice and university.
To support the coherence of research profile at the Department of Nursing Science, the Research Strategy has been developed for years 2011-2015.
Master and licentiate thesis and doctoral dissertations are being integrated in ongoing research project at the Department of Nursing Science. The staff working at the Department leads, implement and coordinate research projects. The academic staff supervises students’ dissertations as part of the research projects. The research projects include national and international collaboration together with other nursing departments and disciplines as well. The research conducted at the Department is being carried out together with health services and educational organisations.
