Course title: MEDI0293 Medical Genetics
Duration: 2 months during Spring Term
Curricular position: 4.-5. year

Content:

Mendelian inheritance. Non-Mendelian inheritance. Chromosome abnormalities. Multifactorial inheritance.  Basic dysmorphology. Cancer genetics. Genetic diseases in Finland, "Finnish disease heritage". Methods and practice of prenatal diagnosis. Genetic counselling.

Aims: The students will learn basics of medical genetics by group teaching sessions and studying individually or as a group. They will get clinical problems to be solved with the help of the tutor. The aim is to learn basics of medical genetics, basics of dysmorphology and use of the most common databases at internet.
Prerequisites:

The students have to be on the clinical courses, preferably at least internal medicine should be passed already.

Examination: There will be an examination and, in addition, the learning will be evaluated in a group session by the tutor.
