Basic Pharmacology for Exchange Students (9 ECTS)

Autumn term 2005

The course consists of twelve group meetings, each lasting about 105 minutes, and a written exam. The first meeting will be on Monday, Oct. 3 at 13.00 h in Pharmacity, 3. floor, the big conference room. The subsequent meeting schedule will be agreed during this meeting.

Self-study is an essential part of the course. The purpose of the group meetings is to discuss the textbook chapters to be read before each meeting. One member of our teaching staff will be present. The teachers will be there to ask and answer questions and to direct the discussion; no lectures will be given. The emphasis will be on the basic pharmacological aspects of the textbook chapters. Mechanisms of action are important; dosages and treatment schedules are not. It will be sufficient to browse through the paragraphs dealing with the clinical aspects.

The textbook is Rang, Dale, Ritter & Moore: Pharmacology. Fifth edition, Churchill Livingstone 2003.
