Stomatognathic Physiology
The basics of the anatomy, histology, physiology and function of the stomatognathic system, as well as the epidemiology, etiology, diagnostics and treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are taught within the programmes of both under- and postgraduate training for dentsits.
Stomatognathic physiology is a basic discipline of odontology. A well-functioning stomatognathic system should be the goal of all dental treatment.
Attainment goals
- The student should understand the basic significance to dentistry of the stomatognathic system.
- The student should be made familier with the physiologic function and pathophysiologic mechanisms of the stomatognathic system.
- The student should know and understand the relationship between the temporomandibular joints, the movements of the lower jaw and the teeth.
- The student should be able to diagnose and treat TMD.
Teaching methods used are lectures, seminars and PBL.
Clinical training focuses on the diagnostics and treatment principles of TMD. Occlusal adjustment, which is needed in all kinds of oral rehabilitation is also thoroughly taught . Teaching is given as personal chair-side teaching.
